JOIN THE MOVEMENT

Chicago’s time is now. Become a part of the coalition working towards real solutions to address homelessness for thousands of families across our city.

The coalition aims to restructure the Real Estate Transfer Tax (RETT), a one-time tax on properties when they are sold to create a substantial and legally dedicated revenue stream to provide permanent affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness.

OUR PROPOSAL

Restructure the Real Estate Transfer Tax (RETT), a one-time tax paid when a property is sold. A property sold for less than $1 million would see a decrease. Properties sold for more the $1 million would see an increase.

Nearly 93% of properties would see a decrease. The increase only applies to about 4.2% of properties sold every year.

The new tax is estimated to generate at least $100 million every single year, and be legally dedicated to programs that alleviate homelessness, including assistance for children, veterans, and those fleeing gender-based violence.

Bring Chicago Home was born out of the

growing need to address our

housing and homelessness crisis

in a real and meaningful way

Over 68,000 Chicagoans are experiencing homelessness on the streets, in shelters, or living doubled-up.
The best way to tackle this challenge is to strategically invest resources in permanent housing with wraparound supportive services.
Because when people get housed, we want them to stay housed.

HISTORY

For decades, Chicago has ignored the growing homelessness crisis in Chicago. As a result, over 68,000 Chicagoans experience homelessness on the streets, in shelters or living doubled-up, meaning people are couch surfing with family or friends with no place to call home. The Bring Chicago Home campaign launched in the fall of 2018 to create a new revenue stream that would be legally dedicated to providing permanent affordable housing with wraparound supportive services to people experiencing homelessness. To date, the campaign has been endorsed by over 100 community, policy, labor and faith-based organizations.

With this funding,

we can create

permanent housing with supportive services

for those

who need it most.

Permanent Housing with Supportive Services is a model that combines affordable housing with wraparound services needed to create long-term stability.
This means:

  • Preservation of existing housing

  • Creation of new housing

  • Housing Vouchers

  • Other potential models that combine affordable housing with services

So when people are housed, they STAY in their home.

CHICAGO BELIEVES IN THIS

72% of Chicago voters support raising the real estate transfer tax on properties over $1 million to create housing and services for people experiencing homelessness. (Based on recent polling)

MAKING AN IMPACT

SUBSTANTIAL

More than 68,000 Chicagoans live on the streets, in shelters, or doubled-up. We need a substantial amount of money to make a meaningful impact.

DEDICATED

A dedicated revenue stream is necessary to ensure people remain housed and that funding is not subject to fluctuations in annual appropriations and ongoing priority changes of future administrations.

EFFECTIVE

Permanent Housing with Supportive Services is the most effective solution to ending homelessness for families and individuals, coupling affordable housing with supportive services to ensure long-term stability.
